Grinder Conversion Tool

What does 25 clicks on a Comandante translate to on a Kinu? Convert settings across 36 grinders, or work backwards from the brew method you want to the setting it needs.

Frequently asked
How accurate is the click conversion?

It converts through particle size in microns, so the direction is reliable but the numbers are approximate. Conical burr grinders do not change grind size perfectly linearly with clicks, so this tool fits a straight line to the honestcoffeeguide measured charts. A model is only listed when that line reproduces the measured ranges within one click or 45 microns.

Why does the same micron figure taste different on another grinder?

Because the particle distribution differs even when the average size matches. Burr geometry and alignment change how many fines are produced, and those fines over-extract — so the same nominal grind size can taste more or less bitter. Treat the converted setting as a starting point and finish by taste.

How do I find the zero point?

On most hand grinders zero is where you turn the adjustment dial to its finest position and the burrs touch. Stop where it will not turn further, then count clicks out from there. Do it with the grinder empty — leftover beans between the burrs will shift the zero.

Do I need to recalibrate as the burrs wear?

Yes. As burrs wear, the same click count grinds slightly coarser. After roughly 20-30kg of beans, or whenever your usual setting starts pulling noticeably faster, reset the zero point and write down your reference settings again.

Can I trust this for espresso?

Only as a starting point. Espresso shifts dramatically over a few clicks, so use the converted value to get close, then adjust one click at a time while watching shot time. The wider a grinder’s adjustment range, the more each click matters.

Only models with verifiable measured data are included. Models missing from the source chart, or where the linear model failed to reproduce the measured ranges, were deliberately left out — Baratza Encore ESP, Fellow Ode Gen 2, Niche Zero and Porlex Mini II are excluded for that reason. If yours is absent, pick a model with a similar adjustment range and micron span for a rough bearing.
